Saliva Management Clinic
The Saliva Management Clinic is a creative and innovative project under the direction of Dr. Sam Daniel ear, nose and throat specialist.
The clinic is designed to assess children and youth who have difficulty with drooling and aspiration of saliva. It is held once a month and involves multidisciplinary assessments that will help to identify factors potentially contributing to the saliva management problem. Some of these factors may include the structure and function of the oral mechanism, the potential for learning volitional control of saliva, positioning, postural & head controls, medication, dental status, ear, nose & throat findings.
The team pooling together their expertise to complete these assessments consists of a nose and throat specialist, a pediatric dentist, a pediatrician, a speech-language pathologist, an occupational therapist, a social worker and a clinic secretary.
The clinical findings and recommendations for management of the drooling problem are discussed with the family immediately following the clinic. One or more of the following may be recommended: no treatment, oral-motor exercises, a feeding program, behavior modification to increase the awareness of drooling, improved seating/posture/head control, dental/orthodontic procedures, medication or surgery. If Botox injection is recommended, the intervention can be done in the afternoon or at the following Clinic depending of the client’s preference.
Any individual between the ages of 0 and 18 years old (or 18-21years old if still attending high school) presenting with a significant and persistent saliva management problem may be referred. They need not have a physical disability; however, only clients who fit the mandate of Mackay Rehabilitation Centre will be eligible for other services. A referral from an attending physician is required.
