Rehabilitation Program
in Specialized Schools
The Rehabilitation Program in Specialized School is for children aged between 4 and 18 years old (or 18 and 21 years old if still attending high) presenting with a significant and persistent physical disability which includes motor, language and sensorial impairments. Children eligible for this program must be attending a Social Affairs School specialized in physical disabilities such as Mackay Center School, Philippe Layton School or a satellite class at Westmount High School.
Social Affairs schools, currently under the responsibility of the English Montreal School Board (EMSB), are a regional resource designed to meet the rehabilitation needs of a specific group of children requiring high frequency intervention. Mackay Centre School, amongst others, is therefore a temporary school placement that receives students upon referral only.
The school setting and daily curriculum are organized to offer an integrated education and therapy program so that children who have extensive therapeutic and support needs don’t miss out on schooling while receiving their rehabilitation interventions.
The multidisciplinary team consisting of professionals from a variety of disciplines such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, special education, social work, psychology, nursing and music therapy amongst others work in conjunction with the education staff to meet the needs and goals identified by the child and the family. Modalities of intervention will vary according to the needs such as individual or joint therapy, group and class interventions as well as parent workshops.
Given the profile of this unique program and the mandate of the Mackay Rehabilitation Centre and Mackay Center School as a Social Affairs School, children admitted into this integrated education and therapeutic setting must meet specific criteria of admission.
The Rehabilitation Program in Specialized Schools holds rehabilitation clinics at the Philippe Layton School in collaboration with the Montreal Association for the Blind.
To be eligible for this program, a child must be referred by a health professional.
