Deaf and Hard
of Hearing Program
The Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Program is for people of all ages presenting with a significant and persistent hearing loss wanting to receive services in English. The program is divided into two* sub-programs to respect life cycles which are the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and Youth Program* and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults and Seniors*.
A multidisciplinary team consisting of professionals from a variety of disciplines such as speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, special education, psychology, social work and audiology work together in an interdisciplinary way to meet the needs and goals identified by the client and the family.
In the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and Youth Program*, an innovative and creative approach has been developed for children newly diagnosed with a hearing loss called “Explorations”. “Explorations” is a 6 month diagnostic Program that supports the parents and the child’s family in understanding and coping with the diagnosis of hearing loss. The Exploration Program will guide the family in the stimulation of their child’s language, auditory and speech development and assist them in being able to make educated decisions about the child’s ongoing intervention and eventual school placement.
Different communication approaches for each family’s evolving needs (oral language, sign-supported language and sign language) are available across all programs for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing population. Also, a comprehensive pre- and post-rehabilitation program for all clients with Cochlear implants is offered.
In order to make rehabilitation and social integration services more accessible to the Anglophone Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Laval residents, Mackay Rehabilitation Centre, in agreement with the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital, is now serving these clients in a Satellite Office housed at the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital.
To be admissible for services, a person must be diagnosed with a sensorineural or permanent conductive hearing loss. The referral source must join a copy the audiogram showing the degree of hearing loss to the Request for Services Form (DSIE form for professionals working within the Ministry of Health and Social Services).
For those who have a sensorineural or permanent conductive hearing loss, we offer:
- Different communication approaches for each family's evolving needs (oral language, sign-supported oral language and sign language)
- A comprehensive pre- and post-rehabilitation program for those with Cochlear implants
- Community integration support
