Communication
Disorders Program
The Communication Disorder Program is for children aged between 0 and 18 years old (or 18 and 21 years old if still attending high school) presenting with a significant and persistent disability in the communication domain such as a speech and language disorder, a severe language delay or an auditory processing disorder.
A multidisciplinary team consisting of professionals from a variety of disciplines such as speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, special education, psychology, social work and audiology work together in an interdisciplinary way to meet the needs and goals identified by the child and the family. Modalities of intervention will vary from individual or joint therapy, to group interventions or parent workshops according to the needs.
To be admissible for services, a child must be referred by a health professional. In the case of a speech and language disorder or a severe language delay, the referral source must attach a copy of the speech and language pathology evaluation to the Request for Services Form (DSIE form for professionals working within the Ministry of Health and Social Services). If a child presents with an auditory processing disorder, an Audiology evaluation is mandatory when indicated ideally by a psychology evaluation.
