Dysphagia Clinic
The Dysphagia Clinic is joint project between the Montreal Association for the Blind (MAB), the Mackay Rehabilitation Centre and the Montreal Children’s Hospital of the MUHC, designed to assist families and therapists involved with children and youth who present with significant and persistent dysphagia problems. The clinic has a specific and innovative consultation format that invites the treating therapist to join in the multidisciplinary assessment and participate at the family conference in order to help resolve the family’s concern.
This dynamic and interactive meeting evolves around a multidisciplinary assessment that will help to identify factors potentially contributing or aggravating the swallowing and feeding problem. The clinical findings and recommendations for management of the swallowing and feeding problem are discussed with the family immediately following the assessment.
The team consists of a pediatrician, a dietician and an occupational therapist. A psychologist, dentist and otolaryngologist are available on consult at the Mackay Rehabilitation Centre. Links with other specialists needed to investigate further specific areas are established with the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
The referring therapist is responsible of the implementation of the recommendations of the Dysphagia Clinic. A follow-up visit with the Clinic’s specialists is available for coaching of rehabilitation techniques, reviewing of medical results following referrals or for education or support to the family or professionals according to needs. The clinic is held monthly.
Any individual between the ages of 0 and 18 years old (or 18-21years old if still attending high school) presenting with a complex swallowing or feeding problem in the context of a physical impairment may be referred. A referral from an attending physician is required.
