Clinic for the
Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Clinic is part of a program called “Explorations” which has been developed for children newly diagnosed with a hearing loss. “Explorations” is a 6 month diagnostic Program that supports the parents and the child’s family in understanding and coping with the diagnosis of hearing loss. The Exploration Program will guide the family in the stimulation of their child’s language, auditory and speech development and assist them in being able to make educated decisions about the child’s ongoing intervention and eventual school placement. A clinic is held whenever a child newly diagnosed with a hearing impairment is registered with the centre.
The pediatrician attending the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Clinic is part of a team of professionals which includes audiologists, educators, speech therapists, auditory/verbal therapist, social worker, occupational therapist and physiotherapist.
Following the physical examination, the pediatrician will discuss the clinical findings and recommendations with the family. Some children have no problems apart from hearing loss, other children have hearing loss along with other birth defects: a “syndrome”. A genetics consultant can help to identify a syndrome and point out other possible medical needs. Some causes of deafness can also affect the vision. All children with hearing impairment should be assessed by a pediatric ophthalmologist [eye doctor]. Information is also given regarding the immunizations recommended for children with hearing impairment.
Referrals to other specialists (i.e. ophthalmologists and geneticists) are done when needed as well as discussion of the basic tests that are recommended for children diagnosed with hearing impairment. These may include an EKG, urinalysis for protein, a CT scan or MRI of the cochlea, blood testing for genetic causes of deafness, and blood testing for congenital infections [TORCH screen]
Follow-up is offered to parents after results of testing and consultation become available.
